Ather Energy, led by CEO Tarun Mehta, is set to introduce two exciting additions to its electric scooter line-up next year. Responding to popular demand, the company is developing a family-oriented scooter and a more powerful variant of the 450X. Here’s all you need to know about it:

Family-oriented Scooter:

A couple of weeks ago, we saw a test mule of the Ather family-oriented scooter, and here were our key takeaways from it:

Ather Energy is set to introduce a new electric scooter with a distinctive overall boxy design, reminiscent of the TVS iQube. Spy shots reveal features such as a wheel design similar to the Ather 450S/450X, an apron-mounted headlight, a foldable pillion footrest, and a petal disc brake up front. Notably, the foldable pillion footrest, introduced later in the 450 range, will be available from the initial launch of this upcoming scooter.

The family-oriented scooter boasts a larger, flat floorboard area and a seemingly more spacious seat compared to the Ather Energy 450X and 450S. The rearview mirror, though resembling the 450X, is mounted on simpler stalks. The side panel and seat design appear to draw inspiration from the maxi scooter, as indicated by earlier patent disclosures. Ather's trademark attention to detail is evident in the camouflage, featuring a patterned cartoon drawing of a family, reinforcing the scooter's family-oriented purpose.

Expect the Ather family scooter to share components with the 450S, including the 2.9kWh capacity battery pack, 5.4kW peak power output motor, and LCD instrument console. A potential launch strategy involves introducing an LR (Low Range) version first, followed by an HR (High Range) version, following the pattern seen in other models from the electric vehicle maker's lineup.

Anticipated to hit the market towards the end of 2024 or early 2025, the upcoming Ather family scooter is projected to be priced at Rs 1.3 lakh (ex-showroom, including FAME 2 subsidy). This pricing positions it in the same range as the Ather 450S, providing Ather with two distinct scooters catering to diverse audiences at a similar price point.

Sporty Electric Scooter

In addition to the family scooter, Ather is gearing up to unveil a more powerful variant of the 450X. CEO Tarun Mehta promises that this upcoming scooter will boast "best-in-class features" and increased power. Anticipated specifications include a 3.7kWh capacity battery pack, with the motor tuned for enhanced performance beyond the 6.4kW peak power output seen in the 450X's current 3.7kWh variant. Features such as cruise control and dual-channel ABS are expected to be incorporated, addressing some of the misses in the current-gen 450X.

Notably, transparent body panels are set to make a return, as mentioned by Tarun Mehta. The anticipated price for this variant is around Rs 1.6 lakh (ex-showroom Bengaluru, including FAME 2 subsidy), representing a premium of Rs 10,000 over the current 3.7kWh variant. Ather plans to launch this powerful variant in early 2024, marking a significant milestone as the company celebrates its 10th year in the two-wheeler industry.
